For international businessmen interested in trading with Britain, a treat is in store: she’s 5ft 6in, always in 5in stiletto heels, with long dark hair and a mesmerically silken manner.

Her name is Tamara Mellon, founder of the Jimmy Choo shoe label.

Just 24 hours after David Cameron had appointed her to become a global trade envoy (a similar role to that of Prince Andrew), the 43-year-old divorcee was at her office in New York where the books she is said to keep on her desk include Cosmic Coupling: The Sextrology Of Relationships, as well as Brit-Think, Ameri-Think: A Transatlantic Survival Guide.

Raunchy: Tamara Mellon hides her modesty with a strategically placed cat

So how did Mr Cameron come to choose Tamara as a trade emissary?

He could have been told about her by his wife Samantha, who has met Tamara Mellon on the fashion circuit and who knows her ‘a bit’, although they are not close friends and the shoe queen has never been invited to Chequers. (Nor is she a Tory donor.)

Tamara is better acquainted with the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, through a business leaders’ forum he invited her to join. Certainly, it has been quite a few weeks for the glamorous Ms Mellon, who has a delightful daughter, Minty, eight, from her failed marriage to U.S. banking heir Matthew Mellon.

First, she received an ‘Enduring Vision’ award from the Elton John Aids Foundation, then an OBE for services to the fashion industry from the Queen at Buckingham Palace. Now, she’s a government envoy. And she’s already worth around ?100?million.

Minted: Tamara used to run a market stall - but is now worth millions

Troubled past: Tamara used to run a market stall and almost wrote herself off with drugs

Not bad for a woman who used to run a market stall and almost wrote herself off with drugs. She still considers herself to be ‘in recovery’, helped by periods of meditation, cigarettes and the knowledge that Narcotics Anonymous (whose meetings she once attended) is always available to help if ever needed.

But then, she is the daughter of a man noted for his single-mindedness, a quality she obviously inherited, as became clear when she took her mother to court in a bitter dispute over ?6?million shares in the company — and won.

Her dad, Tommy Yeardye, was born in Ireland to an unmarried Irish mother called Kathleen and brought up by her in London. He grew to be 6ft 4in with ‘fists like bricks’ and was nicknamed Muscles.

Stories about Yeardye, who died six years ago, and his alleged early friendships with underworld figures still swirl around the capital.

He most famously lived for some years with screen siren Diana Dors. He met her while working as a film body-double, standing in for Hollywood star Victor Mature. It was a bedroom scene. Within days he had moved into the voluptuous Dors’s Thames-side mansion.

Having been born into poverty, Yeardye had an unflagging determination to succeed. This, according to a friend, was ‘his greatest gift to Tamara. She’s exactly like that’.

Helped by the fame he achieved as Diana Dors’s live-in ‘bodyguard’, Yeardye bought a Soho club and opened a restaurant.

In addition to that, Yeardye also became involved in the fashion world by investing in electric hair curlers, then sold his interest to Clairol. Through this he had become a friend of Vidal Sassoon, whose Bond Street salon was filled with stars and celebrities.

Yeardye realised that the Sassoon name could be marketed internationally and the two men took the brand to the U.S., where Yeardye moved with his wife Ann to a house next door to Nancy Sinatra. He sold his interest in the haircare empire in the early Eighties.

Glamorous: Tamara's father Tommy Yeardye most famously lived for some years with screen siren Diana Dors

By the time Tamara asked her father for a loan of ?150,000 in 1996 to start a business with Choo, a talented Malaysian-born shoemaker, Yeardye owned more than 30 properties in Holland Park and Notting Hill.

Married to Ann, a former Chanel model, he was happy to help his only daughter for two reasons. One was her obvious entrepreneurial enthusiasm. The other was that it proved she had finally torn herself away from the drugs that had put her into a sanatorium.

Tamara had got into trouble after her parents had moved to the U.S. and sent her to board at the ultra-smart Heathfield School, in Ascot, and then to finishing school in Gstaad.

Like all rich men who have grown up poor, her father had wanted his daughter to be a lady.

But when she left school, instead of stepping into the debs ‘season’ she headed for Portobello Road market and began selling T-shirts from a stall. At first, her self-made-millionaire father was delighted by her enterprise and told her: ‘Great. You’ll learn how to trade, how to buy and sell.’

Tamara was appointed global trade envoy for Britain by Prime Minister David Cameron. She had previously been invited to a business leaders forum by Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne. The men are pictured here in China yesterday

But London’s clubbing scene was irresistible for this attractive, high-spirited girl and soon Tamara Yeardye was living it up.

At school she had been told not to bother with university because, as she recalled, she was told she was ‘probably going to get married soon enough’.

Despite lots of boyfriends, there was no sign of marriage and when she was about to enrol on a fashion design course, a family friend gave her a job at Browns fashion boutique. Next, in 1990, she moved to Vogue magazine as an assistant, rising to become accessories editor.

At the time, Jimmy Choo was already a bespoke shoemaker with a workshop in Hackney (his clients included Princess Diana). With a rich father and a Vogue-inspired taste for rich clothes, Tamara bought her own shoes from him.

Where she obtained her drugs, which were increasingly part of her life, is less clear.

Romantic ties: Tamara has been linked to singer Pharrell Williams and Detroit-based rock star Kid Rock (right)

By 1995, she was often to be found with ‘It’ girls Tara Palmer-Tomkinson and Tamara Beckwith and her partying was eclipsing her work. With Tara, she posed naked for a photoshoot for Tatler magazine — holding a handbag. It was such publicity and her promotion of Jimmy Choos on the fashionable party circuit that helped boost her business.

But now 28, she also had a drug problem. She resigned from Vogue and checked into a rehab clinic. Six weeks later, she emerged clean.

‘They said they’d never seen anyone with so much determination to get well,’ she recalls.

Ah, yes, the Yeardye determination again. And that was when she realised that the talents of a brilliant ladies’ shoemaker could be marketed worldwide — with help from that loan from her father.

After they started to work together, Tamara bumped into a man she’d previously met at a meeting of Narcotics Anonymous. He was Matthew Mellon, heir to 14 trust funds, with a history (unlike her own) of rehabs and relapses.

Two years later, they were married at Blenheim Palace. She wore a Valentino dress as well as 41 carats of diamonds. But the marriage was turbulent, especially when Matthew got his hands on drugs.

Star couple: Tamara had a two-year relationship with Hollywood actor Christian Slater

As Tamara worked on the rapidly expanding Jimmy Choo empire, her new husband would sometimes lock himself away, and once disappeared before turning up on the other side of the world.

Even at the time she gave birth to a daughter, Minty, in 2002, Matthew Mellon was missing from home.

‘I did fret about her (Minty),’ Tamara has said, ‘but you do your best and when you first have a baby you’re almost detached from reality anyway. I took some maternity leave, but I had a board meeting in my house a week after she was born.’

In fact, marriage to Mellon, she said, ‘was like looking after a child’.

She was 35 when she embarked on an affair with the then 21-year-old Oscar Humphries, art dealer son of comedian Barry Humphries.

In 1997 Tamara married Matthew Mellon - heir to 14 trust funds

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/11/09/article-1328260-01012BFD000004B0-633_306x423.jpg

In 1997 Tamara married Matthew Mellon - heir to 14 trust funds. Divorce followed in 2005

Oscar wrote headily about his exciting affair with an older woman — without naming her — in a newspaper article, but the name Tamara Mellon eventually leaked out.

These were the days before the word ‘cougar’ loaned a rosy respectability to older women in such a relationship with a younger man. But, says a friend: ‘I don’t think she was bothered one jot by the publicity — she’s very tough and independent.

‘Actually, I think she was quite amused at what people would have been thinking of her having an affair with such a young chap.’

Not surprisingly, a divorce from Matthew followed in 2005 and it became acrimonious when it was claimed that he had used private agents to snoop on his wife’s emails and online bank account.

Yet, since then, things have relaxed a little and Tamara has chosen to live in a huge apartment in New York with a terrace overlooking Central Park, so that their daughter can be closer to her father and his family, especially Minty’s grandmother in Palm Beach.

As for Minty’s maternal grandmother, the widowed Ann, 70, who also lives in the U.S., relations are rather less cordial. Tamara does not even speak to her. She successfully fought a bitter court battle against her mother last year for the return of ?6?million in company shares which Tamara claimed had been wrongly paid into a family trust.

Tamara has described her mother as a ‘sociopath’. Astonishingly, she told American Elle magazine that her mother was jealous of her looks and success. ‘We never got along,’ she said. ‘She wanted to be me, I think, which seems terribly sad.’

Some felt it was sad that Tamara Mellon, powerful and rich, had used such cutting words about her own mother. But perhaps in doing so, yet again, we see how like her father, Tommy Yeardye, she can be.

When Diana Dors eventually replaced Tommy as her companion with the comedian Dickie Dawson, Tommy remarked that looking after the ‘emotional’ star had been ‘a 26-hours-a-day job with no holidays’.

As for Tamara Mellon’s love life, she remains unattached. In recent times she has been linked with Italian billionaire Flavio Briatore, U.S. porn tycoon Joe Francis, singer Pharrell Williams and Detroit-based rock star Kid Rock, who was later briefly married to the actress Pamela Anderson. She also had a two-year relationship with actor Christian Slater.

But at 43, Britain’s newest trade envoy remains single, a state in which we may find her for some time.

‘Make your money and buy your freedom,’ she has advised women.

‘I would love to inspire women to take responsibility for themselves, not to be dependent on men. Because then you can be truly happy.’ And successful.
